YOUTH BASEBALL
The Sonzongi, Bottitto & Fingerhut CPA’s Diamondbacks won the 2009 Pacific Coast League World Series by defeating the York Fence Yankees 7-5.
The D’backs completed a 16-2 season edging out the Yankees in a close fought battle to win the title. Starting pitcher Liam O’Callaghan threw three strong innings and Tomas Minsavage closed the game out with three more innings.
The game was highlighted with Peter Minsavage, Jared Sapirman and Jake Berkowitz all scoring two runs. Tomas Minsavage had a double and single, scored a run and had four RBI in the game.
As they did all season long, the Diamondbacks won with defense. Mike Korson started the game making a diving catch in center field, while Berkowitz had two put outs and an assist at third base. Peter Minsavage had six putouts at first base, while O’Callaghan and Tomas Minsavage recorded eight strikeouts during the game.
The team’s defense was the key to the successful season. Players like Patrick O’Callaghan, Korson Sam Gerber and Evan Smith regularly caught fly balls in the outfield. Kevin Michaels, Justin Soifer and Andrew Chang made several plays at second. Michael Ur and Tomas Minsavage anchored the infield at shortstop. Berkowitz made some outstanding plays at third base. Peter Minsavage was the big guy at first base who also hit three balls out of the park. No. 1 catcher Sapirman threw out runners at second base .
The D’backs had strong pitching all season long as well. Liam O’Callaghan clocked 36 innings, Tomas Minsavage 27 innings and Ur 17 innings. The pitching was also supported with the D’backs averaging 12 runs a game.
