Youngster drowns in pool accident

A6-year-old boy from Texas who was visiting his grandparents drowned after he fell into their in-ground pool on July 15.

The incident occurred at 5:30 p.m., police said. Officer David Liantonio said emergency personnel conducted 55 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child.

The boy was reportedly visiting his grandparents with his 8-year-old brother.

“The grandmother had noticed the boy first at the bottom of the pool and started screaming,” said Liantonio. “Then the grandfather jumped into the pool, retrieved the boy, and then started CPR.”

Liantonio said a neighbor heard the commotion and called her son, who was a lifeguard. He went over to help with the CPR.

“Police and Edison Emergency Medical Services [EMS] were in the area and responded fairly quickly,” Liantonio said.

Paramedics from JFK Medical Center in Edison transported the boy to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m.

Liantonio said they might never know how long the boy was in the pool or what made him go in.

“He was fully clothed and still had his shoes on,” he said.

The parents of the boys, who were in Texas at the time, were notified, police said.
