Brazilian film next up for library festival

The 2009 Summer International Film Festival at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center, will begin again Aug. 4 with 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. screenings of the Brazilian film “The Year My Parents Went on Vacation.” The 2006 movie, rated PG, was directed by Cao Hamburger.

When they go into hiding from the secret police, Mauro’s parents tell him they’re going on vacation and send him to live with his Jewish grandfather. While there, Mauro plays soccer with his new friends and dreams of a Brazilian World Cup victory in the coming-of-age tale.

“Slumdog Millionaire,” the R-rated 2008 British film directed by Danny Boyle, will be shown on Aug. 11 at the library.

The film tell the story of Jamal Malik, an uneducated street kid, who is one question away from wining the jackpot on India’s version of the “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?” television game show. Suspected of cheating, Jamal is arrested and brutally interrogated. In flashbacks, he explains how he knows the answers to the questions and reflects on his childhood in the slums of Mumbai. The international hit won multiple awards in 2009, including an Oscar for best picture.

Admission to both films is free of charge. Reservations are not required. The series is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
