OLD BRIDGE — A 40-year-old Matawan man who police said was under the influence struck and injured two pedestrians while driving on Route 516 early Sunday morning.
The driver, John Stevens, was traveling west on Route 516 in a 2005 Honda Accord when his vehicle hit William J. Ryan, 23, and Joann Reilly, 40, both of Old Bridge, at the Gaub Road intersection near the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, according to township police.
Authorities said the Old Bridge Red and White First Aid Squad responded to the scene and the victims were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Both suffered internal injuries and were initially listed in critical condition. As of Tuesday, Joann Reilly had been upgraded to good condition and William Ryan was in serious condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Stevens was charged with driving while intoxicated and was released pending an investigation by the Old Bridge Police Department.
Police Lt. Robert Moser said he could not release further details about the circumstances of the accident due to the nature of the investigation.
