WEST WINDSOR — The Lewis School will hold its second annual walkathon and 10th annual soccer tournament Saturday at Mercer County Park.
The proceeds raised from the walk will benefit The Lewis School Annual Fund. The school aims to raise $35,000 from corporate sponsors and individual walkers and runners. Participants will be taking a leisurely 5-mile trek on the walking path at Mercer County Park.
Panera Bread of North and Central New Jersey is the Tree Level Presenting Sponsor with its gift of $10,000 to the event. Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith and Davis LLP has become a Leaf Level Sponsor with its donation of $2,500, and Roma Bank has become a Pine Cone Level Sponsor with its contribution of $1,000.
The activity will kick off with a 1-mile children’s race at 8:30 a.m followed by the walkathon and soccer tournament at 9 a.m.
The walkathon, dedicated to the memory of Marsha Lewis’ brother, William Gaynor Dovey, is titled “First Child in the Woods,” a tribute to Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the Woods.”
Mr. Louv advocates for children reconnecting with nature, a goal The Lewis School shares and promotes through its Green Living and Learning programs.
”Last Child in the Woods” links the lack of nature in children’s lives to troubling childhood trends such as obesity, attention disorder and depression.
Registration is $10 per walker, ages 7 and up, and all registered walkers get a “First Child in the Woods” T-shirt. Register online at www.lewisschool.org or by calling 609-924-8120.
