The Kimball Medical Center Foundation recently established the Samantha Montemayor Nursing Scholarship program in honor of the daughter of Kimball Medical Center employee Domingo Montemayor, a nurse on the Intensive Care Unit.
Samantha Montemayor, whose goal was to become a nurse like both of her parents, was killed in a car accident. This scholarship will provide another individual with the opportunity to realize his or her dream while keeping Samantha’s spirit alive.
The Kimball Medical Center Foundation is accepting donations from community members and employees to create this nursing scholarship in Samantha’s name. Donations of any amount are appreciated. Call the Kimball Medical Center Foundation at 732-886-4438 for further information.
The Lakewood EMS recently received a $104,000 grant from the Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) Assistance Fund for one of two new Lakewood ambulances. With a township contribution of additional funds, the EMS was able to purchase a 2009 ambulance.
In addition, Hatzolah ambulance service, a volunteer EMS group in Lakewood, applied for a UEZ grant and received funding for another ambulance.
With the help of former UEZ director Russell Corby and Patricia Komsa, the new Lakewood UEZ director, the township submitted a request to the UEZ for a grant, since a great deal of the ambulance call volume falls within the area of UEZ projects. Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein is the liaison to the Lakewood EMS services.

Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, has once again earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval by demonstrating compliance with the Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety.
To earn and maintain accreditation, a hospital must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team. Joint Commission surveys are unannounced and occur 18 to 39 months after the previous unannounced survey.
What the unannounced Joint Commission surveys tell the public is that the hospital is ready anytime to be surveyed according to the highest health care industry standards. The objective of the survey is not only to evaluate the hospital, but to provide education and guidance that will help staff continue to improve the hospital’s performance.
The survey process evaluates actual care processes by tracing patients through the care, treatment and services they received, and it also analyzes key operational systems that directly impact the quality and safety of patient care.
