The Immaculate Conception Youth Organization (ICYO), Spotswood, has established a partnership with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). PCA, a Stanford University-based nonprofit organization, works with coaches, organizational leaders and parents to more effectively teach young athletes not only how to win, but also how to learn about teamwork, discipline, respect and goal-setting through their sports experience.
The formal letter of understanding signed by ICYO and PCA calls for PCA workshops for coaches and parents in the youth sports programs The workshops are scheduled to begin in October 2009. For information about the dates and locations, contact Kathy Mauro at [email protected].
Monroe Recreation is seeking volunteers for three Special Sports programs for special-needs athletes:
• Basketball Pals, Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to noon during October and November in the Monroe Recreation Gym.
• Track Stars, 6:45-8 p.m. Mondays at Brookside School, January through June.
• Buddy Ball Baseball, 10:30 a.m. to noon Sundays in April at James Monroe Park.
All the players will be exposed to the rules of the games and the fun of playing on teams. They will learn about good health habits, community involvement, social skill, and positive selfimage.
Volunteers are needed for all programs, regardless of experience. Volunteers can work directly with a player, help with planning or clerical, or be spectators and cheer on successes. This is a perfect opportunity to get involved and make a difference in your local community.
