State awards Monroe money for sidewalk

MONROE — The township will receive a $190,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation to construct a sidewalk extension on Perrineville Road.

The sidewalk will be constructed on the easterly side of Perrineville Road between the current Monroe Township High School building and the U.S. Postal Service post office, where no sidewalk currently exists.

“Thanks to Governor Corzine, our local legislators and NJDOT, we will be able to provide safe pedestrian travel in this busy area,” Mayor Richard Pucci said in a press release. “It will also allow people to walk safely from the high school to the new soccer fields on Prospect Plains Road, located behind the post office.”

The funding is a part of the state’s $104 million Municipal Aid grant program, intended to provide funds to put people to work on critical infrastructure projects. The Monroe project is one of 457 municipal initiatives to receive funding from the program.
