Wrecking ball’s toll leaves a deep hole of sadness

As a 30-year resident of Millstone, I passed the corner of Sweetmans Lane and Stillhouse Road the other day and witnessed the destruction of a township landmark.

The following words came to mind. On the road where Redcoats once marched was built a church — St. Joe’s — bricks sturdy and strong, mortared with love. Hilltop steeple proudly shows its church bell rang life’s cadence to founding generations long past. Now the wrecking ball’s toll leaves us a deep hole filled with sadness from a town with more class.

In a country that preserves residences, factories, theaters, mills and even prisons, it amazes me that a building in which children were baptized, couples were married, loved ones were buried, and people congregated to get nearer their god is blatantly destroyed in the blink of an eye. For those of us old enough to remember, history was once taught in our schools and tradition was practiced in our homes.
