A 15-year-old freshman at South Brunswick High School is in critical condition after she fell through a warehouse skylight and plunged 25 feet to the floor on Saturday evening, police said.
Police determined the girl and three friends gained access to the warehouse roof by climbing from a lower warehouse roof of the facility located in the area of Georges Road and Haypress Road. Police are still trying to determine how girl ended up falling through the skylight.
”It appears they had just gone up there to go exploring,” said Sgt. James Ryan, Police Department spokesman. “The best detectives could do to piece together what happened prior to her falling through the glass is still unclear. It’s still undetermined exactly how she ended up falling.”
Sgt. Ryan said there were patches of ice on the warehouse roof but it has not been determined if the ice was the cause of the fall.
A 911 call was received by police at 6:32 p.m. from the three other teenagers who reported their friend had fallen through a skylight into a warehouse.
The teens were unsure of their location, but police were able to trace the cell phone call to determine the area. Officers arrived and located the three juveniles, who pointed police to the warehouse.
Members of the Monmouth Junction Fire Department forced their way into the warehouse, searched the area and found the victim lying unconscious on the floor. The Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad rushed the girl to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she remains in the pediatric intensive care unit in critical condition.
The three other teenagers told police they attempted to call the victim after she fell through the skylight but got no response, prompting them to call 911, according to Sgt. Ryan.
The investigation into the incident is being conducted by Detective Richard Schwarz.
