The 14th annual Rowan University softballwinter hitting series will be held 5-7 p.m. Sunday nights, Jan. 31, Feb. 14, 21, and 28, at the Esbjornson Gymnasium on the Rowan campus in Glassboro. Rowan head coach, Kim Wilson, coaching staff and players, will provide instruction. The cost is $100 per camper. Players must bring their own bat and sneakers. Registration is due with full payment by Jan. 21. Checks should be payable to Rowan Athletics (with Rowan Softball written in the memo line) and sent to Kim Wilson, Softball Office, Rowan University, 201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, NJ 08028. Ocean County College’s sailing team finished fourth and fifth in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) club championships on Nov. 7 and 8.

The OCC and the Toms River Yacht Club hosted the two-day regatta.

Seventeen elite club teams from the MAISA conference converged on the Toms River to sail 420s and techs. The competitors sailed 18 races on Saturday and eight races on Sunday. Rochester Institute was unable to attend, and with this opening, OCC sailed a second team.

The following teams competed for the championship, in order of finish: University of Pennsylvania, Fordham University, University of Virginia, OCC (4th and 5th), George Washington University, William and Mary College, Villanova University, Columbia University, Queens University (Canada), Cornell University, Drexel University, American University, Loyola College, Virginia Tech, Princeton University, Monmouth University and University of Maryland.

Racing for OCC in the A Division were Tyler Kennedy (Pine Beach) and his crew Sarah Salter (Toms River), and Holden Muehleisen (Tuckerton) and his crew Autumn Hoover (Lanoka Harbor).

Sailing in the B Division were Brad Wright (Lavallette) and his crew Jamie Wasco (Brick), and Derek Douglas (Seaside) and his crews Emi Bowden (Brick), Kristin Kilar (Brick) and Breanna Bruns (Pine Beach).

The race judges on the water included Drew Seibert, June Kingman, Harry Foote, Jim Walsh, and Chris Petracco. Greg Matzat served as principle race officer, with mark set Matt Geotting.

Defending Women’s Professional Soccer champion Sky Blue FC will hold open tryouts on Jan. 5-6 at the Robbinsville Field House, 153 Manor Way, Robbinsville. Tryouts are intended for college seniors or players who have completed their college eligibility. All participants must be at least 18 years old.

Each session of the open tryouts will run from 1-5:30 p.m., and the combines will include both tactical and technical training that will be led by the Sky Blue FC coaching staff. Players must arrive game-ready (cleats, no screw-ins) and prepared to participate on both days of their respective combine.

Registration is $75 and must be paid through the Sky Blue FC online registration at www.skybluesoccer.com. (click on news). The registration deadline for the January combine is Dec. 29. Hotel and additional information is also available on the online registration page.

Also on hand at the tryout will be Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues, the WLeague affiliate program of Sky Blue FC. Space for the open tryouts is limited, so interested players are encouraged to register as quickly as they can.
