UPPER FREEHOLD — The young men who made history received accolades from the township last week.

The Allentown Redbirds Junior Midgets and their proud families filled the meeting room at the Dec. 17 Township Committee meeting, as officials honored the winning Pop Warner team.

Each team member and coach received a certificate of achievement from the governing body. The Junior Midgets became the township’s first Division 3 team to win the Garden State Championship.

“As you were winning each game, we wanted to make sure we recognized you,” Mayor Steve Alexander said, adding that the team accomplished quite a feat this year.

Alexander noted the sacrifices players had to make.

“It’s not easy going to practice when no one else is,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Stan Moslowski Jr. said he had seen the boys practicing on the fields at night, and when he passed by them later in the evening they were still practicing.

The Allentown Redbirds are holding a banquet on Jan. 24 at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe. For more information, visit www.eteamz.com/AllentownCentralRedbirds/.
