It takes both talent and depth to win a relay championship in track and field. These credentials have been Christian Brothers Academy’s trademark for as long as anyone can remember.
The Colts made full use of its stable of talent to win the NJSIAA Non-Public A State Group Relay Championship on Sunday at the John Bennett Indoor Sports Complex.
The Colts rolled up 50 points to beat Pope John XXIII (36) by 14 points. The Colts did with a victory in just one event, the shot put relay.
Andrew Rohan’s big 51-0 was the best mark of the competition. Teammate Mark Stafurik did 41-5. Their combined 92-5 was good enough to win the state title.
On the track, Matt Pozo, Phil Reid, Chris Gileta and John Engels were second in the 55-meter shuttle hurdles (31.79) and the 4×800 team of Rich Bohny, Dan Mykityshyn, Dan Bailey and Mark Lee was also second (8:13.446). Those were the highest finishes on the track for the champions.
In finishing second to Union Catholic
8:09.80), the Colts ran under the former Group record of 8:14.24 set by Monsignor Donovan.
This was the Colts’ third consecutive victory at the State Group Relays.
Friday, back at the Bennett Complex, individual titles as well as an overall team championship will be on the line at the Monmouth County Championships.
