Silent films show ice boating on the Navesink

RED BANK — “Hoping for a Strong Wind and a Hard Freeze” was the wish of the Navesink River ice boaters filmed by Thomas Edison between 1901 and 1904, a wish that remains true today.

The Atrium at Navesink Harbor, in conjunction with the Navesink Maritime Heritage Association (www.navesinkmaritime.org), invites the public to a fascinating look at this part of the area’s nautical history and heritage.

These rarely viewed films have been archived in the Library of Congress, and their presentation will be followed with a retrospective by Charles Ladoulis, president of the Navesink Maritime Heritage Association, on the history of ice boating and boat building in the Navesink River area at the turn of the century.

The free presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at The Atrium, 40 Riverside Ave. in Red Bank. Call 1-800- 842-2480 to RSVP.
