Manville Youth Athletic League will hold annual registration for the spring 2010 season at Gerber Field on Dukes Parkway on the following dates: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Feb. 4 and Feb. 10; and 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Feb. 6.
Eligible players include any youth living in or attending school in Manville, 7-15 years of age as of April 30, 2010, or 6 years old by July 31, 2010.
Bring the following to registration: a copy of birth certificate; registration fee of $65 check or cash ($15 for each additional child); candy fundraiser $24 check or cash; work bond check, post dated to July 31, 2010, in the amount of $100 (returned after the season is over and bond is fulfilled). Signing up after Feb. 14th incurs an additional $15 charge.

The Camplain Volunteer Fire Company of Manville announced tickets for its annual fundraising bus trips to NASCAR Sprint Cup races in 2010 are now on sale. The trips will include a one-day trip to Dover Downs on May 16, and Pocono Raceway on Aug. 1. The trips include round-trip bus transportation from Manville, race tickets food and beverages. Also being planned is a trip to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Labor Day weekend race. All proceeds from the trips will benefit the Camplain Volunteer Fire Company building and equipment fund. The camp is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., June 28 to July 2, and is open to youth who have completed grades 1 through 6 by June. Registration fee is $200. Space is limited, so register early. Full and partial scholarships are available to those who qualify. The Manville Democratic Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the Veterans of Foreign Wars annex room — the next meeting will be Feb. 4. Body Shop Total Fitness on Route 206 in Hillsborough will hold an all-day fitness class-a-thon to help raise money for Haitian relief, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 6. The cost to participate is a $10 donation to the Red Cross Foundation; members and non-members of the gym are welcome to participate. A representative of the Somerset County Chapter of the Red Cross will be attending the event to answer any questions you may have about the foundation or the events at are currently happening in Haiti. The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band will present its annual children’s concert 3 p.m. Feb. 7th in the Bridgewater-Raritan High School auditorium, 600 Garretson Road. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert will be followed by a demonstration of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in the auditorium lobby given by members of the band.

The Manville Borough Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in the municipal complex.
Tuesday, Feb. 9
The Manville Board of Education will meet at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the media center at Alexander Batcho Intermediate School.
Wednesday, Feb. 10
St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church will sponsor a Slavic dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 10. The dinner will be held in the St. Mary Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Blvd. The cost is $10 for adults (ages 9 and up) and $5 for children, and includes all-you-can-eat pirohi, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, salad, desert and beverage. The Hillsborough Education Association will sponsor a Comedy Night at Rhythms scholarship fundraiser, featuring Adam Mamawala, HHS Class of 2005. The show will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 17, at the Rhythms of the Night restaurant in Manville. Tickets are $25, and can be purchased from the HEA at 417 Route 206 (above the Peapack-Gladstone Bank), or by calling 908-359-0230; no tickets will be sold at the door. The cost of the ticket is tax deductible. Mr. Mamawala has appeared at comedy clubs including Caroline’s, Comix, and Broadway Comedy Club in New York City, and was the title of funniest college comedian at 2007’s New Jersey Comedy Festival while attending The College of New Jersey. His Youtube comedy channel (www.youtube.com/mamawalacomedy) received a 5-star rating.
The public is invited to attend a Tea Party at 2 p.m. Feb. 26, to learn the history and health benefits of tea from Daryl Minch, M.Ed., CFCS, Family & Community Health Sciences Educator of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Somerset County. The program will be held at The Avalon Assisting Living at 393 Amwell Road. There will be a variety of tea selections offered with dessert — attendees are welcome to bring their favorite tea cup.
