PRINCETON: Borough selects new attorney

By Lauren Otis, Staff Writer
Princeton Borough Council is poised to formally select Hill Wallack attorney Maeve E. Cannon as its new borough counsel at its meeting tonight, Tuesday.
Ms. Cannon would replace Karen Cayci, an attorney with the Princeton firm Herbert Van Ness Cayci & Goodell, as borough counsel.
Ms. Cannon is a former township attorney for Ewing Township. A partner in the West Windsor office of Hill Wallack, she concentrates her practice in administrative law, regulatory compliance and corporate litigation, according to a description of her work on her firm’s Web site.
”I’m really very excited to start serving as Princeton Borough attorney,” Ms. Cannon said Monday.
Although she will specifically serve as the borough counsel, “I will definitely call on my fellow attorneys and colleagues as different areas of specialization come up on which I will need their advice,” Ms. Cannon said.
”I look forward to working with Maeve,” said Borough Council President Andrew Koontz.
”It was not an easy decision,” Mr. Koontz said of council’s choice of Ms. Cannon over the other final candidate, Steven Goodell, also an attorney with the Herbert Van Ness firm. “The borough would have been fine either way,” he said.
”The Herbert firm provided the borough with many many years of excellent service,” Mr. Koontz said. “We had obviously taken up the matter of whether the counsel as a whole was wanting to go in a different direction with the municipal attorney,” he said. Those on council who wanted a change of firm prevailed, although “in the end we were all comfortable with the decision,” he said.
”Ultimately Borough Council as a whole was interested in the range and depth of services that Hill Wallack can provide,” Mr. Koontz said.
”We are a large firm with a lot to offer,” Ms. Cannon said.
