Gym sponsors contest modeled after reality weight-loss show

Inspired by the life-changing results seen on the hit reality show “The Biggest Loser,” a local health center and gym is sponsoring a similar competition so local residents can get in on the act.

Old Bridge Snap Fitness on Route 516 and Jamesburg Snap Fitness on Buckelew Avenue are inviting motivated locals to join in “a small-town version of the weight-loss competition.”

“The TV show has shown all of us, busy in our lives with our daily responsibilities, that each one of us can make it happen,” said Gail Goldstein, owner of Snap Fitness. “We can create a change in our lifestyle that will lead to happier and healthier lives for us and our loved ones. The participants on this show not only look great, they feel great.”

Goldstein noted that contestants on the NBC show have lowered their blood pressure and cholesterol; reduced the number of medications they need; brought diabetes and other obesity-related illnesses under control; increased their life expectancy; and increased their daily energy levels.

The local gyms, which are open 24 hours a day, will provide daily plans, including cardio workouts, strength training and nutritional guidelines to contestants, according to Goldstein. There will be weekly weigh-ins, with prizes for the person who loses the greatest percentage of weight each week. Goldstein said the gym would respect the privacy of individuals who would prefer that only their percentage loss is revealed.

The gyms are currently looking for contestants.

“We will run the competition on a rolling enrollment,” Goldstein said. “Members can join at the start of any week. The competition will run for six months, and if our members want, we can roll it out further.”
