AROUND CRANBURY: A weekend of history and art is on the way

by Lorraine Sedor, Columnist
Cranbury’s Frank Marlowe presents “A Talk on Ida B. Wells” on Sunday at 2 p.m. This talk will examine three episodes in Ida B. Wells’ career that illustrate the complex nature of the problems black people faced after emancipation. Frank is sure to provide insight into the inspirational life of this heroic American in celebration of Black History Month.
Also, stop in the library to view an exhibition of paintings from the Four Seasons Water Color Group, throughout the month of March. Pieces by Colleen Cahill, Susan Troost, Marilyn Holland and Marv Sitrin are currently on display.
And on Tuesday, March 4, at 11 a.m., join Jennifer LaFountaine, from My Smart Hands, who will be at the library doing a basic “baby-signing” program for parents and caregivers. Children are welcome to attend.

The Gourgaud Gallery will host a “Closing Reception” for the current exhibit “Art from the Heart IV” by the A-TEAM Artists of Trenton, on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. in the gallery in Town Hall. Due to the inclement weather during the opening reception earlier this month, the artists, poets and musicians will come back to Cranbury to join visitors in celebrating their artistic talents this Sunday to close the exhibit.
The closing reception will feature the art from the A-TEAM, readings of original poetry by artists of The SHARE Project, the performing arts group at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and an acoustic performance by the FunkTASKtiks, SHARE’s new band.
Members of The SHARE Project are excited and honored to perform as a part of the A-TEAM’s closing reception. All artwork is for sale and the Cranbury Arts Council will be waiving the normal 20 percent donation from sales to fully support the A-TEAM Artists of Trenton. So stop by and enjoy beautiful art, music and poetry on Sunday afternoon and support this wonderfully talented group.

The Conservation & Garden Department of The Woman’s Club of Cranbury invites you to attend the March 3 meeting when Ralph Copleman will speak on “Greening the Earth.” Mr. Copleman sees the news about global warming, rising sea levels, deforestation, melting glaciers, thinning ozone, over-fished oceans, and dying coral as overwhelming to our planet. His movement with “Sustainable Lawrence” advises rethinking, reusing and recycling, and by so doing we can reduce our energy consumption by 3 percent every year until we become “climate neutral.” He says, “Sustainability isn’t rocket science. It’s social science.”
The meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3 at Fellowship Hall in the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, 22 S. Main St. You may contact Pat Scott for additional information at 609-395-0757.
