Collision snarls Route 9 traffic

MANALAPAN — An 81-year-old man was cited by Manalapan police for careless driving and failure to stop in charges related to a three-car collision that occurred in the late afternoon hours of Feb. 16 on Route 9.

The drivers of the other two cars were identified by police as a 79-year-old male from the Morganville section of Marlboro and a 17-year-old female from Manalapan.

According to an account of the accident provided by Manalapan police, it was determined that Joseph Goldstein, 81, of Freehold, exited the Towne Pointe shopping center and entered the right lane of Route 9 south.

Police said Goldstein entered Route 9 south in front of another vehicle that was traveling in the right lane, causing the second driver to slam on the brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision with Goldstein’s car.

That second driver struck Goldstein’s vehicle in the rear while pulling into the left lane

of the highway in an attempt to avoid the collision.

That second vehicle was then struck by a vehicle that was heading south in the left lane, causing the second vehicle to leave Route 9 south and come to rest partly on the grass median and partly on Route 9 north, with a traffic light stanchion

on top of it, according to

police.

All three vehicles were towed from the scene due to extensive damage.

Passengers in the third vehicle were transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. All of the other parties involved refused medical assistance. PatrolmanAndrewAdell responded to the accident.
