Garden club launches Rumson Tree Celebration

The Rumson Garden Club is launching the Rumson Tree Celebration, a tree sale that will benefit the community.

According to a press release from the club, the tree project is one of hundreds that are sprouting up across the country under the umbrella of the Garden Club of America’s (GCA) Centennial Tree Project to honor and celebrate the GCA’s centennial in 2013.

Each club has created and developed its own tree project.

Rumson Garden Club Horticulture Chairwoman Diane Guidone has selected five native trees to be offered in two sizes that thrive in Rumson’s climate and soil. The selections are hearty and range from river birch to magnolia. Beginning March 1, the trees can be preordered through the Rumson Garden Club and will be available at the end of April for pick up and planting.

The theme of the sale/celebration, “Green It Up,” underlines the town’s and garden club’s commitment to improve Rumson’s carbon footprint.

Other goals of this project include increasing the biodiversity of Rumson’s tree population, as well as increasing the number of trees in the town. The end result of the tree celebration will beautify the community and benefit the environment, the press release from the garden club notes.

To raise awareness of the necessity of planting and maintaining healthy trees, the Rumson Garden Club, in conjunction with the Rumson Shade Tree Commission, will be working closely with local schools, the Oceanic Library, Boy Scouts and the Rumson Department of Public Works. The initiative will include brochures with information about each specimen and its care needs, a tree poem competition, a display at the library devoted to trees and tree identification workshops.

As part of the tree celebration, the garden club will offer planting and pruning demonstrations to ensure the future health of the trees

Order forms are available at the post office, the library, various stores and at borough hall.

The trees will be available for collection behind Rumson Borough Hall on Friday, April 30, from 4-6 p.m. and Saturday, May 1, from 8-11a.m.

The Rumson Garden Club is active in the beautification of Rumson, including the landscape design for the site of the new borough hall, plantings around the pond at Dean Porter School, the Centennial Garden at Forrestdale School, and the club maintains the islands and West Park and the sign at Crazees.
