Local motorists won’t have to travel far for such things as renewing a driver’s license now that the state Motor Vehicle Commission has opened the doors of a new facility on Route 130 in Dayton.
The new facility, which opened last month, will allow motorists to perform a variety of tasks at the site, according to MVC spokesman John Santana.
"We’ve been looking at sites that are state-owned where we could put in modern facilities," Mr. Santana said. "That was our master plan for this site in South Brunswick, and this is really going to better and more convenient for customers."
The move from a 4,600-square-foot site in East Brunswick will save about $120,000 per year on leasing fees and utilities, according to Mr. Santana. The new 7,000-square-foot facility cost just under $5 million and was funded by a 2003 state bond.
The new MVC office, which is adjacent to the existing inspection station, will feature 15 service counters, a greeter to guide customers to the proper station, four sites for digital license photos and computers for driving tests.
"When you walk into the agency, all of the counters will be right there in front of you, and you will be greeted at the door and helped with what you are there for," Mr. Santana said. "You will be guided through stations where workers will review your documents, make sure you have the proper forms and guide you to the next step. It’s going to make each visit easier for our customers."
The agency will be open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
