EAST WINDSOR – One man is dead and a toddler remained hospitalized with serious injuries after an early morning car crash Wednesday.
James J. Johnson Jr., 52, of Middlesex, was killed at 6:02 a.m. when the box truck he was driving on Mercer Street left the road, crossed the grass median and struck a sport utility vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, police said.
The other vehicle’s driver, Barbara Richards, 42, of Lawrence, along with her 3-year-old daughter were rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for medical treatment, according to police.
The nature of their injuries was not immediately known. But Ms. Richards was released Thursday.
Police said the accident happened near the intersection of Mercer Street and Route 130 and that the collision forced both vehicles off the roadway.
No charges had yet been filed Thursday. The accident remained under investigation by both local police and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Serious Collision Unit, police said.
