Oceanfest a 20-year July 4 tradition

Long Branch will host the 20th annual Oceanfest Independence Day celebration on Sunday, July 4, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., rain or shine.

Oceanfest is a free, family-friendly celebration that takes place along the half-mile stretch of the oceanfront Promenade between Seven Presidents Park and the Ocean Place Resort & Spa. Along the Promenade, dozens of crafters and vendors will offer children’s activities and tempting food offerings ranging from cheese steaks to kabobs, salads to seafood and in between.

The annual sand sculpture competition always draws a crowd to watch four master sand sculptors at work on one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

Free live musical entertainment will be presented throughout the day, and children will enjoy the live circus-like performers and magicians and games, face painters and balloon artists. For a small fee, children can also expend some energy in the soft play activity center.

Basketball enthusiasts looking for a little competitive action can register for the Long Branch Department of Recreation’s annual three-on-three basketball tournament, starting at 10 a.m. The winning team will receive a trophy, basketballs and a gift certificate to local establishments. Those interested in participating can contact the Recreation Department at 732-571-6545 to register.

Once the sun sets, it’s time for the spectacular finale. Co-hosted by the city of Long Branch and the Greater Long Branch Chamber of Commerce, the Oceanfest finale features one of the Jersey Shore’s largest fireworks displays at 9 p.m., according to a press release from the chamber.

The chamber’s Oceanfest Committee is again asking the public for financial support. Fireworks Fund collection boxes will be located throughout the city, and donations can also be sent to the chamber office at P.O. Box 628, Long Branch, NJ 07740.
