The Lawrence U-12 Wildcats girls soccer team recently won their flight in the Sunburst Soccer Tournament in West Windsor.
Lawrence took a 4-1 win over the West Windsor Cosmos in the opener, as Yasmin Rubio scored twice and Katie O’Reilly and Abby Smith scored solo goals. Hannah Zoll had two assists and went on to have an outstanding tournament at center midfield. Jackie Drury and Kathryn Svoboda had stand out games on defense.
Lawrence won game two, 1-0, over the Edison Wildcats as O’Reilly hit a laser from 25 yards out on an assist from Christine Scott. That was followed by a 1-0 win over Spotswood as O’Reilly assisted Rubio on the game’s lone goal. In the final, Lawrence took a 2-0 win over the East Brunswick Dynamite as Sydney Hunt converted a cross from O’Reilly and Hailey Andrew bent in a corner kick.
Persis Rao, Sophie Moore, Becca Altman and Sophie Webster created opportunities from the midfield throughout the tourney, while Isabella Corcoran and Raven Linton did stellar work in the back as they only let up just one goal. Abby Smith and Courtney Arch split the goaltending duties, and made several key saves.
The U-8 Blazers gave a stellar effort at the Sunburst Tournament. Goalie Jason Lobben made several diving saves and Vinnie Giangrosso blocked a penalty kick. Ryan Sargent and Gavin Bedell each scored goals, while Matthew Kildea and Luke Okupski applied offensive pressure.
Nikhil Kotta and Max Crouthamel also contributed to the effort, Robbie Lynch put on an impressive display of dribbling and turning to thwart attackers, while Alex Hatfield and Jude and Luke Bidle were strong in defense.
