A writers’ workshop open to the public will be held at Middlesex County College, Edison, on Friday, Aug. 6. The program mixes sessions on writing skills with practical tips on selling what you have written.
Public school teachers may earn five professional development credits at the workshop.
The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees may take part in a “spoken word” contest, in which they rap poetry they have written. The winner will receive $100.
Lunch will be provided. Participants may select one workshop per session.
Session 1: “Poetry, Politics and Power,” Hank Kalet; “The Art of Translation,” Santi Buscemi; “Drafting the Gods: Using Mythology in Creative Writing,” Mat Spano; and “The Memoir,” Shirley Wachtel.
Session 2: “Herbs: Acres of Inspiration — Writing About Plants and Nature,” Gertrude Coleman; “Poetry Workshop,” Emanuel di Pasquale, Hank Kalet and Dan Zimmerman; “Screenwriting,” Ben Marshall; and “Writing and Selling for Magazines and Blogs,” Melissa Edwards.
Session 3: “The Opinionated Writer — Creating the Op-Ed Piece,” Dan Zimmerman and Hank Kalet; “Children’s Literature,” Shirley Wachtel; “Poetry Workshop: ExtendingYourWork,” Steven Barnhart; and “Painting and Poetry,” Susan Altman and Mat Spano.
Session 4: “Screenwriting,” Ben Marshall; “Independent Publishing and Desktop Publishing,” Melissa Edwards; “The Creative Memoir,” Keith Drumbore; and “Haiku,” Mat Spano
“Express Yourself” is being offered as a fundraiser to support the publication of the Middlesex County College literary journal. The registration fee is $75 (same-day registration is $80); of that, $60 is considered a contribution for tax purposes.
