Nursing honor society chapter celebrates 20th anniversary

LONG BRANCH — The honor society of nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), one of the largest international nursing organizations, works to foster, develop and connect nurse scholars and leaders worldwide to improve health care. The honor society promotes nursing excellence through its initiatives in research, leadership, an electronic library, programming and publications, and develops and distributes nursing knowledge for use in practice.

In 1985, Lambda Delta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was established under the initiative of Janice Marchetti. And for all of these years, Lambda Delta has continued to join the force to promote and raise the bar of excellence in the nursing profession. The chapter has garnered several awards since its inception; the latest was the prestigious Chapter Key Award last November 2009.

The chapter’s celebration was held at Jumping Brook Country Club on May 15. It was a triple celebration: the yearly new member induction, award giving, and the 20th chapter anniversary. The event brought together past chapter presidents, members, inductees, families and groups of friends to celebrate and enjoy the event.

Twenty new members were inducted into the honor society. Inductees were graduate students and nurse leaders from different hospitals. Presentations of several awards were given to deserving members. The award recognizes exceptional leadership, mentorship and service to Sigma Theta Tau International and/or their university or hospital/system. The following were the awardees.

• Vicky DeNoia, APRN-BC, recipient of the Hannelore Sweetwood Mentorship award;

• Lolita C. Jacob, R.N., FNP-BC, DNP, received the Janice Marchetti Leadership award;

• Allan Guerra, BSN, CCRN, recipient of the Dean Marilyn Lauria Scholarship award;

• Benjamin Patiak received the Friend of Nursing award.

Lambda Delta has been making significant strides for 20 years and invites prospective members to join the chapter. For information on how to become a member, contact cmarvulli@ sbhcs.com or [email protected].
