Hillsborough Pool, Racquet and Fitness Club will host a fundraising event to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital Aug. 22 to Aug. 28. Participants will seek sponsors for exercise routines, with all proceeds going to the hospital. The club recommends sponsors donate $1 for each mile run by a sponsored participant; or for each 5 miles biked; 1 mile swam; 5,000 meters rowed; or each aerobic class attended. The Somerset County Park Commission is seeking children ages 6 – 12 to sign up as Junior Ranger recruits for a summer of outdoor entertainment and education. The Junior Rangers will learn about the natural world and how ecosystems work while working hand in hand with the Park Rangers; Junior Ranger Workbooks are available for free at the Ranger stations in Colonial Park in Franklin Township and Duke Island Park in Bridgewater. When the activities in the Workbook are completed a Park Ranger to review the work, administer the Junior Ranger pledge, and present the official Junior Ranger badge.
Junior Rangers are also entitled to participate in special events and programs throughout the summer and fall. Upcoming programs include: Pond Clean-up at Colonial Park on Aug. 15; Tree Tour at Natirar on Sept. 25; Mountain Biking at Washington Valley Park on Oct. 2; and Learning Lenape at Colonial Park Nov. 20.

A car wash scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 21 at Hillsborough Elementary School, Route 206 and Amwell Road, will benefit the Hillsborough High School band and guard programs. Just $5 for a car wash; $7 for a van.
The American Red Cross will also hold an open blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 21 at Somerville Lumber Company, 1480 Route 22 East, Bridgewater. To be eligible, donors must be at least 110 pounds, 16 years of age and in good general health. There is currently a special need for Type O negative – the American Red Cross’ supply of this blood type has dipped to critically low levels. O negative is always in high demand as it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, which is especially important in an emergency situation. Donors with O negative type blood are encouraged to consider donating as soon as possible. This blood drive is completely open; appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. "Bagels, Bible and Belief," an alternative worship experience each Sunday through the summer, continues at the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church at 9:30 am. We will explore: "What we believe and the ‘so what’ that we do?" All are welcome and it’s casual summer Sundays at HPC.
Hillsborough Cinemas Cruise Nights will continue this week, with entertainment beginning at 5 p.m. in the theater parking lot on Raider Boulevard. A special showing of "Jailhouse Rock" will be presented at 7:30 p.m.; admission is $3 per person.

The Somerset Valley Players will hold open auditions for "The Curious Savage," by John Patrick and directed by Danielle Barry, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the theater at 689 Amwell Road. Callbacks (if necessary) will be held Sept. 2. Performance dates are Oct. 29 – Nov. 14. Casting will be for five men, ages 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60; and six women, ages 22, 24, 35, 45, 50 and 70 or older; and one 5-7 year-old-boy (a non-speaking cameo). Author Robin Gaby Fisher, a nationally-acclaimed news feature writer with the Star-Ledger, will have a book signing of "After the Fire," the story of two survivors of the deadly 2000 fire at Seton Hall University, at the Manville Public Library, 100 S. 10th Ave., Manville, at noon Sept. 13.
