BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP – State police said they arrested two Florida men last week after finding they were hauling 60 pounds of marijuana along the New Jersey Turnpike.
Pedro Ramos, 43, of Miami, Florida, and Armando Rivero, also 43, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, were charged Aug. 11 with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (over 50 grams of marijuana) with intent to distribute.
State police Sgt. Julian Castellanos said he did not have information on why the truck was stopped, but the men "displayed some deceptive behavior" when speaking with police at 4:27 p.m. at mile marker 53.3, near Interchange 7.
Sgt. Castellanos said the troopers gained to consent to search the pair’s tractor-trailer and a K-9 found 60 pounds of hydroponically grown marijuana along with some boxes of bananas and others bearing the markings of the United Postal Service. The truck was registered to Rivero Transportation Inc., of Port Saint Lucie, he added.
Both men were sent to Burlington County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail each, neither with the option to post 10 percent for release. – Geoffrey Wertime
