Hillsborough police will participate in the national campaign against drunk driving – known as "Over the limit, under arrest" – from Friday through Sept. 6.
The department will conduct impaired driving checkpoints at various locations over the course of the program, as well as increase then number of officers on patrol.
The goal of the program is to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving, and to arrest those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to a press release.
Police suggest drivers find alternative transportation, or have a designated driver, if they’ve been drinking.
Police also ask drivers to report suspected drunk drivers by dialing #77on cell phones.
Authorities note 185 people were killed in New Jersey last year as a result of alcohol-related crashes, 31 percent of the total of 583 fatalities reported. Of those, 67 occurred during summer months.
