MONROE – The Dey Farm will host vintage baseball Saturday, Oct. 2, with a doubleheader featuring Flemington Neshanock versus the Philadelphia Athletics, beginning at noon.
Remember Cap Anson, Albert Spalding and Alexander Cartwright? See baseball the way it was played in the 1860s and 1870s when the Flemington Neshanock play the Philadelphia Athletics on the north pasture of the Dey Farm, located near the intersection of Applegarth and Federal roads.
Bring the family and friends to 19th-century base ball (two words back then where fielders play barehanded (no gloves), balls can be caught on a bounce for an out, the batter can request where he wants the ball to be pitched, and the umpire warns the batter before calling strikes.
The game was faster, played for fun and very different. The likes of Maddog, Thumbs, Bootleg, Hammer and Brooklyn will be playing.
Pack a picnic basket, bring a lawn chair, blanket or sit on a hay bale and see two matches of vintage baseball.
This event is sponsored by the Monroe Township Historic Preservation Commission and is free for all. Light refreshments will be available for purchase.
Parking will be on Federal Road.
