BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP – A steel beam recently recovered from the World Trade Center site was transported through Bordentown Township on Saturday morning as part of a caravan of vehicles traveling from New York City to Arlington, Virginia.
The Bordentown Township Fire District No. 2, Derby Fire Company, was invited to set up its firetrucks on the Dunns Mill Road overpass to salute the procession as the caravan passed underneath on Interstate 295.
The company displayed an American flag atop its raised fire engine ladder to honor those fallen during the World Trade Center terrorist attack.
The local fire company was one of many stationed on overpasses along the interstate route to Virginia.
Every emergency squad along the caravan’s route from New York City to Arlington was invited to participate and many companies from Burlington County did so.
The motorcade, known as Iron and Steel: NYC — Arlington, was sponsored by the Fire Family Transport Foundation and is similar to World Trade Center steel events that have occurred over the last two years.
Also a part of the caravan were two restored New York City firetrucks that had been damaged in the aftermath of the Sept. 11attacks.
Approximately 1,000 motorcycles, ridden by New York City firefighters and family members of those who were lost, accompanied the caravan for the duration of its journey.
The professional firefighters of Fire District No. 2 were represented by Chief William Hartman, Capt. Joseph Herzberg and others.
The steel beam at the heart of the caravan is being brought to Virginia where it will become part of a Sept. 11 monument.
