On Sept. 3, the Hopewell Township Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint, beginning at 8 p.m. and ending on Sept. 4 at 2 a.m.
The checkpoint will be conducted on Pennington Road at Denow Road. The police department has experienced a disproportionately high number of crashes along this section of roadway, many of them serious, and some involving alcohol. The purpose of the checkpoint is to educate motorists about alcohol related to motor vehicle offenses.
Individuals passing through the checkpoint will receive information packets regarding alcohol-related offenses. The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will provide the information.
In the event of inclement weather on Sept. 3, the checkpoint will be held on Sept. 4, beginning at 8 p.m. and ending on Sept. 5 at 2 a.m.
Hopewell Township police Chief George Meyer reported:
– Officer Christopher Vaccarino charged Matthew Devlin, 18, of Van Dyke Road, Hopewell Township, with two counts of theft on Aug. 19. While employed at the Union Line Garage on Princeton Avenue, Hopewell Borough, Mr. Devlin allegedly double-swiped two customers’ credit cards on Nov. 22, 2009. The loss was estimated at $40. This case will be heard in Municipal Court.
– Officer Christopher Kascik saw a car traveling north along Route 31 and crossing over the centerline several times. The officer spoke with the driver, Suzette Lawrence, 41, of East Boulevard, Bethlehem, Pa., who had the odor of alcohol on her breath. After performing field sobriety tests, Ms. Lawrence was transported to police headquarters for processing. She was charged with DWI, reckless driving, suspended registration, no seatbelt and open container. She was released to an acquaintance. Her case will be heard in Municipal Court.
– Officer Kascik went to a Chicory Lane residence to investigate a report of criminal mischief on Aug. 21. Sometime between 6 p.m. on Aug. 20 and 2 a.m. Aug. 21, someone threw several eggs against the home and two cars parked in the driveway. An estimate was not placed on the damage.
– Officer Michael Toth went to a Pennington-Titusville Road address to investigate a report of a suspicious occurrence on Aug. 21. Sometime between 11 p.m. Aug. 19 and 1 p.m. Aug. 21, someone cut the screen to a second-story window and opened the unsecured window. An audible alarm system was activated. It did not appear that entry was made to the residence.
– Officer Kevin Koveloski went to a Pierson Drive address to investigate a report of a burglary on Aug. 21. Sometime between 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 20 and 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 21, someone entered the house through a first-floor window and removed a laptop computer. The loss was estimated at $1,000. Detective Daniel McKeown is assisting with this investigation.
