The Manville Senior Citizens meet at 12:30 p.m. every second Thursday of the month at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290 located on Washington Avenue. The club is open to new members who are residents of Manville, age 60 and older, or age 55 if disabled.
Canned goods or non-perishable food items will continue to be collected before each meeting, as well as soup labels. Food donations are needed by the food bank.
Blood pressure screening is held before the beginning of each meeting.
Pat Zangaro was elected first vice-president for the unexpired term of George Jakelsky. Rich Armstrong, Recreation Commission director, spoke on the Community Day being held 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 25 at Lincoln Park. The Manville Rescue Squad will lead off the festivities with a parade form Manville borough hall to the park in recognition of its 75th anniversary. There was a discussion regarding next year’s picnic and it was decided that it will be returning to Fridays and possibly in June instead of July but open to further consideration.
It’s that time of the year again, tickets will be on sale September, October and November for the annual Christmas Party to be held Dec. 12 at the VFW. Tickets are $10 for members, and $20 for guests and the same reimbursement procedures will be followed. As a special treat, Frank Bruno is bringing a band which plays on his radio show to entertain us with Polish and country-western music. Come join the fun at the Sept. 9 meeting.
Donna has finalized the dates for our 2011 trips. They are Mohegan Sun Feb. 1-3; Renfro Valley, Ky., June 2-6; and Branson, Mo., Oct. 1-9. She will have information available, as well as sign-up sheets, and can be contacted at 908-722-0325.
Recreation events
Dec. 31: Country-Western Day at the Inn at Hunts Landing, Matamoras, Pa. Trip includes a welcome reception with pastries and coffee, hot breakfast buffet, movie, participation in bingo or card playing, 4-hour open bar, music, dancing, entertainment and themed-dinner buffet. The bus will depart from the VFW at 7:30 a.m. and leave the Inn at 4 p.m. The cost is $68, and can be booked with Josephine Pschar at 908-722-0156.
Atlantic City: The bus leaves at 9 a.m. from the VFW parking lot on the third Wednesday of each month for Showboat Casino, and the cost is $25. The trip is now open to the public by reservation only – make your reservation with Josephine Pschar at the meeting or call her at 908-722-0156.

Manville Senior Center, South Third Avenue, Manville, is open from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Open to anyone older than 60.
