Bucks County Academy of Fencing Epeeist Drew Ridge has secured a position on the U.S. Men’s Epee Team at the Veteran World Cup this fall.
Mr. Ridge, 59, qualified via the U.S. National Fencing Championships held in July, where he tied for third out of 59 competitors in the Veterans 50-59 category.
As one of four members of the Men’s Epee Veteran (50-59) squad, Mr. Ridge will join other U.S. athletes competing in the Veteran World cup in Porec, Croatia, Sept. 28 to Oct. 3. This will mark Mr. Ridge’s third straight year as a member of the U.S. Men’s Team at the Veteran World Championships.
A resident of Ivyland, Pa., Mr. Ridge has been fencing since 2001. He trains with Maestro Mark Holbrow and Maestro James Flint, who is a past member of the U.S. Veteran World Team. Mr. Ridge holds an A rating in epee, the highest of the U.S. Fencing Association classifications. He is a cancer surgeon at the Fox Chase Center in northeast Philadelphia.
Veterans events are open to fencers 50 and above on the international level, and 40 and above in the U.S.
Maestro Flint also tied for third in the Veterans 60-69 category out of 31 fencers. Both Mr. Flint and Mr. Ridge took third as part of a four-man team in the Men’s Epee Team competition, which had 16 teams competing.
The U.S. Fencing Association Summer National Championships were held in July 4.
Founded in New Hope in 1981, Bucks County Academy of Fencing is celebrating nearly 30 years of training men and women in the classic art of fencing. Classes are open to anyone 8 and up. The academy moved to Lambertville in 2003.
