CRANBURY Residents on Parkview Road and Hardley Drive asked the school board Tuesday to consider moving school bus stops.
The stop, which is on Old Trenton Road, is dangerous because of the amount of traffic on the road, residents said. In the past, students were picked up on Parkview Road and Hardley Drive, but the stops were removed and new stops were created on Old Trenton Road.
Hardley Drive resident Daniel Kinney Old Trenton Road is dangerous for children due to its high volume of traffic and high rate of speed. He also said that there was a lack of communication with parents and asked the school board to reverse the decision and put the two stops back on the previous roads.
”You’re not thinking of our children’s safety as much as we are,” Mr. Kinney said.
Robin Black, of Parkview Road, agreed with Mr. Kinney.
”If it’s not broke, why fix it,”
Kelly Devine, of Hardley Drive, said Old Trenton Road is a terrible place for a bus stop.
”The road rage on Old Trenton Road is disastrous,” she said, and there are many “question marks” as to how fast drivers actually travel.
She suggested that maybe the board should put off the decision to change the stops for a year to see what effect reduced speed limit will have on the road.
Janet Boyle, of Hardley Road, said “it is not logical to put kids on Old Trenton Road.”
Board President Lynne Schwarz addressed the residents’ concerns and apologized that the residents felt that the changing of the bus route was arbitrary.
Ms. Schwarz said the primary reason for the decision was safety and that it was an administrative decision.
The new bus route was created by Business Administrator Joyce Picariello and Transportation Coordinator Kaye Davison.
Ms. Picariello said that the new route was not created in a vacuum. She spoke with the Police Department and bus drivers before the bus route was changed.
Ms. Picariello said the change of the bus route was partially due to the reduced speed limit on Old Trenton Road. The bus route was also changed, she said, to avoid bus drivers having to go on the cul-de-sacs of Parkview Road and Hardley Drive when they pick up and drop off students.
