A painter’s torch sparked a fire at a house on Princeton Avenue, off Nassau Street in Princeton Borough, Wednesday afternoon.
The fire, which damaged the sunroom of the house at 46 Princeton Avenue, was reported at 2:50 p.m., according to Fire Chief Dan Tomalin. It was declared under control within 30 minutes.
The painter was using a heat gun to remove paint from the exterior of a window frame on the first floor of the house. The heat apparently ignited insulation and some material inside the wall, Chief Tomalin said. The fire spread up to the second floor and started to extend into the attic.
The owners were not at home when the fire was reported. Firefighters located the family’s cat in the basement, where it had fled, and rescued it, Chief Tomalin said. No injuries were reported.
About 35 firefighters responded to the call, including members of the Princeton Fire Department, the Kingston Fire Department, the Plainsboro Fire Department and an engine from the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, he said.
