The Hightstown Rams Junior Midget football team ran its Pop Warner record to 2-0 with a 14-2 victory at Franklin Township.
After Craig Monahan punted the Rams out of a poor field position, Hightstown got pinned inside its 20 a second time and this time ended up allowing a safety when the snap went over Monaghan’s head as he tried to punt.
Hightstown mounted a comeback in the second half when Michael Elwell threw a 35-yard completion to Mark Ozoroski, which set up a touchdown run on a sweep by Ozoroski. The play was set up by the blocking of linemen Craig Monahan, Anthony Maisano, Nick Kozic, Matt Jacobson, Kessley Felizer and Brendan Daly.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Rams on both sides of the ball. Hightstown had a long drive capped with a touchdown pass by quarterback Matt Conchar to Daly. Conchar made the play when he faked a handoff to Ozorski diving into the line, then faked a pitch to fullback Luke Redfern before bootlegging around the opposite side before finding an open Daly for a 15-yard score. Monahan’s PAT kick made it 14-2.
Franklin continued to go after the Rams through the air, but defensive pressure by linemen Ryan Conlon, James Anthenelli, Shawn Mozeika and Michael Ragno forced an errant throw that was intercepted by Matt Toth to seal it with four minutes remaining.
Hightstown goes after its third straight win Sunday at the high school against the East Brunswick Golden Bear Chargers.
