Some time has passed since the June 2010 primary and I would like to reintroduce myself to everyone in Hightstown. I ran in the primary on a platform that is in favor of consolidation of services and that is still my main focus.
My wife and I moved to Hightstown seven years ago, attracted by the beautiful old homes in the borough and the cozy downtown. I am glad we moved here as we have made some great friends during this period.
I have worked for over 30 years as a financial manager and administrator. I was hired by various companies that had problems in infrastructure and needed someone to put things right. I have had success in doing just that, walking into a mess and making it work right. I retired three years ago and have the time and interest in providing leadership on a full time basis for the residents of Hightstown.
This past Tuesday I attended the Borough Council meeting. The Voices of Hightstown made a very organized and passionate presentation. The information they provided will force the council and people of the borough to take a closer look at the proposed contract for outsourcing of police services.
There is one statement that was made by VOH that I must take exception to and that is, "Hightstown has a bright and sustainable future." Gov. Christie was forced to reduce this year’s state budget by $11 billion and this was partially accomplished by severely reducing state aid to schools and municipalities. I anticipate that the state will not reinstate aid to municipalities for years to come. For many years Hightstown’s municipal taxes have been subsidized by the state and this additional burden has fallen on us, the homeowner’s of the borough. Without total consolidation of services, the residents of the borough will continue to have annual increases in property taxes and/or extreme reduction in services.
We do not have the financial capability to withstand the status quo and we should support the endeavors of our council.
