Driver faces DWI charge

JACKSON — A resident of Trenton was charged with driving while intoxicated and other motor vehicle violations on Sept. 7.

Jackson police Sgt. Steven Laskiewicz said in a press release that at about 3:30 p.m. Sept. 7, officers responded to East Veterans Highway for a report of an erratic, possibly intoxicated driver.

A driver who was following the suspect vehicle called police headquarters to report that the vehicle, a 1994 Chevy Lumina, was swerving across the road, nearly striking utility poles off the road, and then going into oncoming traffic, Laskiewicz said.

Officers observed the vehicle on East Veterans Highway in the area of the Little League baseball fields, and the vehicle was stopped on East Veterans Highway near the intersection of Bennetts Mills Road.

Police said the driver, identified as William Stone Jr., 55, of Trenton, appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance.

After roadside sobriety tests were conducted by Officer Edward Travisano, Stone was placed under arrest. He was taken to police headquarters and processed. His car was impounded at the scene of the motor vehicle stop.

Stone was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving an uninsured vehicle.

He was released to a family member..
