WEST WINDSOR: Pirates showing off skills of their own

By Rich Fisher, The Packet Group
Chris Miller watched with admiration as the Robbinsville High girls soccer team played against her West Windsor-Plainsboro South squad on Tuesday.
”Wow, are they skilled,” Miller said to no one in particular during the course of the game.
So, with that being said, what does it say about the Pirates, who walked off with a 5-2 victory over the skilled Ravens?
Miller pretty much said it for her team afterward when she addressed them.
”Girls, be happy with this win,” the veteran coach said. “This was a good win against a very, very good team.”
So it stands to reason, the Pirates are also a very, very good team and they showed it against Robbinsville with a relentless offensive attack. South launched 15 shots on the day and only a number of good saves by Hannah Binder stopped the Pirates from blowing it open against the two-time defending Group I champs.
”We played them in a scrimmage so we knew what was coming,” said midfielder Erika Deetjen. “We knew what we had to do today to get it done.”
Deetjen and Michelle Morris each had a goal and an assist, while Melinda Altamore, Kat Philbin and Molly Johnson also hit the back of the net. Victoria Matthews chipped in with an assist and goalie Joanna Gochuico made five saves.
Deetjen feels that a veteran nucleus of seniors has been the key to the Pirates hot start, which has seen them outscore their first two opponents 9-4.
The fact WW-P South has allowed four goals doesn’t concern her.
”No, not at all,” she said. “We have a brand new keeper and she keeps improving. We’re building up. I don’t think we have anything to worry about.”
