MONROE – Two Monroe men were charged with burglary and related charges after police saw them in the parking lot of a local restaurant where a car had been broken into.
Police said that on Sept. 16 at about 3:30 p.m., there was "suspicious activity" in the parking lot in the area of Spotswood Gravel Hill Road near Matchaponix Avenue by someone they recognized, but by the time they went back, the man had left.
They said a 1999 Volvo had been burglarized. A cell phone and wallet containing cash had been removed from the car, which was unlocked. While taking the report, police also put out an alert for the man they had seen in the parking lot, Brian McDermott, 22.
At about 4 p.m., police saw Mr. McDermott and Phillip B. Hollander, 18, walking on Avenue K. As they went up to the two men, Mr. McDermott threw the stolen cell phone from the Volvo under a parked car, police said.
Police also found a Garmin Nuvi GPS that had been stolen from a vehicle parked in the driveway of a private residence on Dancer Court earlier that day.
Mr. McDermott was charged with burglary and theft and taken to the Middlesex County Corrections Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $50,000 bail with no 10 percent cash option.
Mr. Hollander was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of a controlled dangerous substance and taken to the center in lieu of $25,000 bail, no 10 percent cash option.
