The Township Committee agreed Sept. 20 to take over maintenance of the Quaker Road Path once it is complete.
The 6-foot-wide stone path will from the Historical Society of Princeton’s headquarters on Quaker Road to the Princeton Friends School property then across Princeton Battlefield property to the battlefield’s parking lot, according to township engineer Robert Kiser.
The path will be built by the township’s public works department and is being paid for by a Department of Environmental Protection Pathway grant..
According to Mr. Kiser, the Quaker Road Path extends 1,700 feet from the Historical Society’s headquarters to the Princeton Friends School for about 1,700 feet. That portion of the path was constructed earlier this year. Monday’s agreement allows the path to be extended along the Princeton Friends School’s property for about 800 feet and an additional 2,400 feet across the Battlefield property’s parking lot.
"It will then link the Historical Society with the Princeton Battlefield parking, and from that parking lot area one can then continue along the existing path to Mercer Road and continue either to the borough or further out to the township," said Mr. Kiser. "It’s part of an overall system that will link that area of the township to the rest of the township."
While the path is being built by the township’s Public Workers department, the cost of materials is being covered through the DEP grant. In addition, an agreement the Division of Parks and Forestry allows the township to maintain the path.
Eileen Morales, curator of collections with the Historical Society, said the group is pleased the path is going to be built and that it will give visitors a greater understanding of how Princeton’s historical sites all worked together.
"We’re really happy that the township is implementing the path because it’s important for all those sites to be linked," Ms. Morales said. . jsaccenti @centraljersey.com.
