Ball control and teamwork helped Manville Recreation’s coed middle school soccer team to a 6-2 victory over Somerville’s 7th- and 8th- grade boys on Saturday.
Bryan Rojas dribbled through a line of defenders to start the scoring early in the game and teammate Gabriel Berrocal put in the second goal off an indirect kick by Froyland Suarez.
Manville ended the first half 3-0 when Anthony Chavez brought the ball across the goal line from midfield.
Suarez kept the streak going early in the second half with a hard shot into the net after moving the ball halfway across the field, but Somerville quickly answered back with their first goal. Suarez and Rojas then worked the ball up the field for teammate Brett DeFazio to put one in from the 18-yard line.
Somerville came back with another goal, but Manville was able to end the game 6-2 on another Rojas goal after he again moved the ball up from the midfield. Kevin Murillo and Jason Guevara each made several saves as goaltenders against Somerville’s attack.
Holding off Somerville’s offense were defenders Kevin Flores, Kieran Green and Aaron Schlosser. Schlosser also made shots on goal as a forward. Also helping with the Manville attack were Nicholas D’Acosta, Ilene Gonzalez, Kerrigan Johnston and Ramon Quinonez.
Manville faces the Bridgewater Falcons on Saturday.
