"Between the Centuries: A Photographic Journey Back in Time" will be held Oct. 14 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Pennington Public Library.
It is a slide presentation and talk by local historian Jack Koeppel.
This is the first in a series to be given by the Hopewell Valley Historical Society. A limited number of the book, "Pennington Profiles," will be for sale for $25.

Music, brunch at Har Sinai
A Sunday brunch and a pianist-entertainer who specializes in Cole Porter will kick off a new year of Renaissance Club activities at Har Sinai Temple, 2421 Pennington Road.
Open to all, the Oct. 3 event that begins at 11:30 a.m. will feature John Johnson, a Temple University professor and cruise ship entertainer, performing for those who attend.
A $10 per person fee for nonmembers includes both the brunch and Mr. Johnson’s performance. Members, comprised of the congregation’s elders, will be admitted free.
Reservations are required for all and can be made by calling the temple at 609-730-8100.
Deadline for grant is extended
The deadline to apply for a Pennington Day grant has been extended to Monday, Nov. 1.
Visit penningtonday.com and click on the "grants info & application" tab to download and print out an application. Complete the form and mail it to the address listed. There is no fee to apply.
Applications for a grant will be considered from groups and organizations throughout Hopewell Valley and Mercer County organizations serving Hopewell Valley residents. Grant recipients will be announced during the annual grants ceremony in January.

Small business seminar set
The next small business seminar will be held Monday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at Hopewell Valley Regional High School’s board room at 425 S. Main St., Pennington.
The featured presenter will be David Earling, a former banker and owner of Gravity Hill Farm, a local organic farm.

Lasagna dinner to be offered
Hopewell Presbyterian Church will have a lasagna dinner Sunday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.
The cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. A portion of the proceeds will go to Christine’s Hope for Kids.

Conquer Clutter topic of forum
"Conquer Your Clutter" is the topic of the Friday, Oct. 8, brown bag luncheon at 12:30 p.m. at Pennington Presbyterian Church at 13 S. Main St.
Ellen Tozzi, creator of Natural Order, will explain how she creates space to help her clients be peaceful, efficient and happy.
The public is welcome. Beverages and dessert will be served.
The event is sponsored by the Older Adult Ministry Committee of the church and is the first of the series.
Piano forum in Lawrence
The Piano Teachers Forum will meet Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. with coffee at 8:30 a.m.
The program will be the playing of the Syllabus – "Colorful Impressions" – for the Spring Festival. Many teachers will perform syllabus pieces.

Pancake breakfast at fire company
The Pennington Fire Company will hold a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Oct. 3.
Everyone is invited. The breakfast will be held at the firehouse on Broemel Place in Pennington.
Pennington Farmers Market
The Pennington Farmers Market is in the Pennington Shopping Center, Route 31 near West Delaware Avenue.
It is open between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays and has joined forces with the Crisis Ministry of Trenton.
Every Saturday, teens host a collection table in an effort to replenish the stocks of fresh produce in Trenton’s dwindling food pantry, Valley residents are urged to donate excess produce from backyard gardens or farm shares or to buy from local farmers market vendors and donate.
PBPA Networking at golf club
The ninth annual PBPA Networking is set for Oct. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hopewell Valley Golf Club.
Proceeds go toward scholarships for graduating CHS seniors. Vendor tables will be available.

Township final bulk, brush pickup
To arrange for a bulk waste pickup, call 737-0799, ext. 650, or stop at the Public Works facility, 203 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
In addition to five bulk items, residents are allowed four bags/boxes of miscellaneous junk (not to exceed 40 pounds) and one 32-gallon container of wood scraps/construction debris.
Pickups are: Zone 1, Oct. 4; Zone 2, Oct. 12; Zone 3, Oct. 18.
Bulk waste residents must call by Wednesday prior to the scheduled pickup week for their zone. Any residents unsure of their zone should call the Public Works Department.
If this is the first scheduled pickup, it will be free. If not, a nonrefundable fee of $20 must be paid prior to the Wednesday prior to pickup.
Final brush will be picked up same week – no call required. After the October pickups, the program will end and resume in January 2011.
The fall leaf pickup program will start in October and run to the end of December.
Soccer Challenge by Knights
The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is sponsored annually with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions.
All boys and girls 10 to 14 are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the events.
Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. Age eligibility is determined by the age of the contestant as of Sept. 1.

Zonta event to be held
Zonta Club of Trenton/Mercer’s Gourmet Garden Food and Wine Tasting event will take place Oct. 7 from 6-9 p.m. at The Hamilton Manor, 30 Route 156 (at Route 130 S), Hamilton.
Proceeds benefit the Culinary Program of Mercer County Community College, which will grant a scholarship to a woman studying culinary arts. Additional proceeds will benefit other Zonta-supported community outreach programs, service projects and scholarships.

Spaghetti dinner at church
Calvary Baptist Church of Hopewell will host a fundraising spaghetti dinner Oct. 16 from 4-7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 ($5 for children) and should be purchased in advance from church members or by calling 466-1880 or e-mailing [email protected].
The menu includes dinner (several kinds of pasta), dessert (including three kinds of homemade ice cream), beverages and live music. Patrons are invited to bring canned goods or other nonperishable foods for the Hopewell Council of Churches’ food pantry and/or pennies for the "Pennies for Poverty" to support children in New Jersey who live under the poverty line (estimated around 235,000), which has been organized by the youth.
Those bringing items for the food pantry can make a special request of the strolling musicians. The church is located at 3 E. Broad St., Hopewell Borough.
Shredding Day in township
Hopewell Township will sponsor a Shredding Day on Oct. 16 at the Public Works Building, 203 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road, Titusville, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Fellowship group
All community children in grades six-eight are invited to TGIF, an outreach ministry of The Pennington United Methodist Church.
TGIF meets two Fridays a month from 7-8:30 p.m. as well as additional times for extra activities. Youth from several churches and those with no church affiliation and are from multiple communities are participating in fellowship, community service and exploring their relationships with God.

In Pennington, leaves no longer have to be bagged.
They may be placed at the curb in windrows. Leaves will be picked up once a week until further notice.

Donations wanted for needy
Those who want to help needy people in Africa and Central America while also helping Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad can donate items for Millennium International Textiles at a collection box at the firehouse on Route 29 in Titusville.
Millennium International Textiles is based in Flanders. Needed items include clothing of all types, linens (bed sheets, blankets, curtains and the like), shoes (no winter boots), accessory items such as handbags, belts, baseball caps, wallets, backpacks and travel bags and hard or soft toys smaller than 14 inches in size.
Furniture, large items and tires will not be accepted.
In exchange for providing a location for the collection box, Union is paid $150 a month by Millennium International Textiles. Pickups of donations are made on a weekly basis. For more information, call 737-1213.

St. Michael’s mugs at pharmacy
The Hopewell Business Association’s St. Michael’s mugs are available for purchase at Hopewell Pharmacy.
The price is $10 per mug. The supply is limited. Proceeds will benefit HBA and the D&R Greenway Land Trust’s St. Michael’s tract preservation efforts.

The Hopewell Farmers Market is open Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. at the Railroad Station, Railroad Place.

Buy a Brick for walkway
The Hopewell Valley Veterans Association is seeking donations for personalized memorial bricks that will line the walkway at Alliger Park.
Veterans and nonveterans are invited to purchase bricks to honor those who served their country. Bricks can be engraved with up to 15 characters per line (three lines total) and can include years of service, rank, and unit etc. Nonveteran and family bricks may include a family’s name and an expression of appreciation.

Hopewell Borough Adopt-a-Flag
The Hopewell Fire Department and Emergency Medical Unit is sponsoring an Adopt-a-Flag program.
Residents can purchase an American flag through the department. The flags are used to line Broad Street in Hopewell Borough from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Adopt-a-Flag for Pennington
Through the Adopt-a-Flag program, Public Works employees assist the Pennington Parks and Recreation Commission every spring and fall by hanging flags in honor of veterans, loved ones and citizens.
Donations are being accepted for flags to be displayed within the borough from May to September. Purchases and personal dedications can be made by completing an Adopt-a-Flag form, along with a tax-deductible check of $42, which can be found at Borough Hall or on Facebook.
