South Brunswick police arrested a township resident after finding him driving while intoxicated with his wife and two children in his car.
Jorge A. Fuentes, 28, of Monmouth Junction, is facing charges for DWI, as well as additional charges for child endangerment.
At 8:15 p.m. Saturday, police received calls reporting a motor vehicle collision had taken place near the intersection of Route 1 and New Road. Officers arrived and found that one of the vehicles involved in the minor rear-end collision had fled the scene, according to police.
A witness followed the car, a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, as it drove into the South Brunswick Square Mall, which is located about one half mile from the location of the car accident, police said.
Officers responded to the location and found the car, which was driven by Mr. Fuentes. Also found in the vehicle with Mr. Fuentes was his wife and two children, ages 8 and 1.
Police said Mr. Fuentes had called for a tow truck and was waiting for it to arrive when police found him. The investigation determined Mr. Fuentes was intoxicated and had fled the scene of the accident.
Mr. Fuentes was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and refusing to submit to a breath test. He was also charged with two additional counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.
Mr. Fuentes is currently being lodged in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in lieu of $50,000 bail.
