Saturday, Oct. 2 – The Hightstown Masons Apollo Lodge #41 is partnering with the borough of Hightstown to sponsor an autumn boroughwide garage sale that will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Headquarters will be at the lodge, at 535 N. Main St. As the borough’s co-sponsors for this event, information lists, maps, food and beverages will be available there throughout the day. Yard sale
Saturday, Oct. 2 – P.E.O. Chapter Y sponsors this event at 10 Hope Valley Drive in the Cranbury Manor neighborhood of East Windsor from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 3. Proceeds will be used to support Philanthropic Educational Organization projects which include: Cottey College, Educational Loan Fund, scholar awards, International Peace Scholarship and Star Scholarship Fund. P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College; and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.
Watershed FEST
Saturday, Oct. 2 – The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, central New Jersey’s first environmental group, will hold Water Works: The 35th Annual Watershed FEST at 6:30 p.m. at the 860-acre Watershed Reserve in Hopewell.
This year’s FEST fundraiser combines fine food, music and fun with a celebration of the water and environment. The event includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music and a silent auction under a tent. It will conclude with dinner served by Emily’s Cafe and Catering and a fun live auction featuring the chance to take home trips, tickets, jewelry, restaurant packages and more.

Spaghetti dinner
Monday, Oct. 4 – The Hightstown Elks will hold a spaghetti dinner from 5p.m. to 8 p.m. at the lodge, 110 Hickory Corner Road, East Windsor, The cost is $6 per person, with children under 5 and veterans eating free.
Peddie performance
Thursday, Oct. 7 – Darlings of the Canadian music scene, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala, will bring their fresh brand of acoustic pop and folk music to Mount-Burke Theater on the Peddie School campus at 8 p.m. Dala won the 2010 Toronto Independent Music Award for Best Folk Artist and recently released their first live concert DVD.

Friday, Oct. 8 to Friday, Nov. 5 – The Mariboe Gallery at Peddie School in Hightstown presents an exhibition of paintings by New York-based artist Marian Brunn Smith. Hometown Harvest Fair
Saturday, Oct. 9 – Hightstown’s annual event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Continuous entertainment will be provided at the lakeside stage and the fountain at The Point, along with the traditional 5K race, chili cook-off, Ducky Derby, pedal boats on the lake, and about 200 vendors and organizations.
The Children’s Pavilion will include a moonbouncer and slide, a stilt-walker/juggler, balloonist, ponies to ride and baby animals to pet. And new to the fair this year will be a scarecrow contest, an OctoberFest with wine and beer tastings, strolling musicians, a train show, farmer’s market and trolley cars to provide transportation.

Model railroad
Saturday, Oct. 9, Sunday Oct. 10 – The central Jersey N-Trak Club will be operating a model railroad modular layout at the Masonic Lodge Hall, 535 N. Main St., Hightstown, in conjunction with the Harvest Fair. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. A trolley from the center of town can take you there, as vehicular traffic will be restricted. You can enter to win an HO Scale train set. Proceeds of the raffle go to Jamesburg Presbyterian Church Pantry Fund.
Recycling Day
Saturday, Oct. 9 – East Windsor Township will hold this event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the township Senior Center, 40 Lanning Blvd. Free document shredding will be available to township residents. There is a limit of 10 boxes per household, and no commercial entities are permitted. Residents also will be able to drop off cell phones, fluorescent bulbs, toner cartridges, as well as used computers and computer equipment.
The East Windsor/Hightstown Lions Club will be collecting used eye glasses. The Rescue Mission of Trenton will have trucks on-site to collect used furniture, clothing, blankets and working household appliances and electronics. Clothing should be brought in plastic bags, and only usable furniture will be accepted. Charitable donation receipts will be provided by the Rescue Mission.

Bethany fundraiser
Friday, Oct. 15 – A spaghetti fundraiser dinner to help pay for repairs to the Bethany Gospel Mission Home on Stockton Street will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church’s Fellowship Hall, 125 S. Main St., Hightstown. Cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.

Fire company celebration
Saturday, Oct. 16 – Hightstown Engine Company No. 1 will celebrate its 175th anniversary.
A service will be held at noon at the firehouse, followed by a parade that will start at approximately 1 p.m. The parade will proceed from the Minute Maid site on Mercer Street, go down Summit Street to Stockton Street, proceed down Stockton to Main Street, turn left and proceed past the firehouse and out North Main Street.
After the parade, parade participants and spectators and invited to the festivities that will be held behind the firehouse. There will food, music and amusements for the kids.
House tour
Sunday, Oct. 17 – Have you ever driven past beautiful, historic homes in Hightstown and wondered what they look like inside? You will have a chance from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the Hightstown-East Windsor Historical Society’s biannual house tour.
Titled "The Way We Were," this tour will feature five private homes as well as Musing Antiques (located in one of Hightstown’s oldest buildings) and the Hightstown Grange #96 and Masonic Lodge. Advance-sale tickets cost $17 for adults and $5 for children. They are on sale at Perennial Home at 119 W. Ward St., Old Hights Print Shop at 177 Mercer St., and Hair by Sharon at 128 Stockton St., all in Hightstown. In East Windsor, they are available at Weichert Realtors at 417 Route 130.
Habitat fundraiser
Monday, Oct. 18 – The First United Methodist Church of Hightstown will sponsor its fourth annual "Build a House – Build a Dream" golf tournament to support a local Habitat for Humanity house project.
This event will take place at the Peddie Golf Course. For $130 per person or $500 for a foursome, you will receive golf fees with cart, refreshments throughout the day, lunch provided on the course, a cash bar cocktail reception/buffet dinner at the clubhouse, awards and an auction. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 10:45, and a shotgun start will be at 11 a.m.

Beth El lecture
Thursday, Oct. 21 – The Werner Lecture Fund of Beth El Synagogue in East Windsor will sponsor a lecture by Linda Meisel at 7 p.m. The lecture will focus on "The Changing American Jewish Family."
Ms. Meisel is the executive director of the Jewish Family and Children Services of Greater Mercer County. She will discuss how the composition and traditions of Jewish families have changed and how to deal with the pressures and changes occurring in the family dynamics.

Wednesday, Oct. 27 – The third annual Hightstown Haunted Halloween Home Decorating Contest will be judged Wednesday, Oct. 27. The Boo Crew using the following criteria: originality, neatness, scariness and overall appearance. Residents are encouraged to nominate a residence that they feel demonstrates the Halloween spirit.
Nominations will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26. First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced and awarded prizes at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 at It’s Magic, the magic store by the fountain at 109 Mercer St.

Book sale
Thursday, Nov. 18 – Sunday, Nov. 21 –The Friends of the Hickory Corner Library will hold this event from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 18; from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 20; and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 21. Members also can come from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 18. Thousands of books will be on sale along with DVDs, CDs, videotapes, audio books and comics. Proceeds are used to finance the purchase of new materials and special programs for the library.

Family Fun Maze – Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 25 through Oct. 31 at Corner-Copia Farm Market and Garden Center, corner of Princeton-Hightstown Road and Old Trenton Road in East Windsor. The maze also is available during the week for birthday parties and other groups. Call 609-426-8884 for group rates and reservations.
This intricate, 10-acre maze carved in the shape of a witch on a broomstick also is a family-friendly game of "whodunit." As explorers solve the maze, they also collect clues at 12 checkpoints to solve "the mystery of the missing farmer." A refreshment stand, pumpkin picking and petting zoo are on site for added enjoyment.

Farmer’s market – Hightstown’s weekly Farmers’ Market is open every Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. through the last Friday of September. Hosted by the Parks and Recreation Commission and Downtown Hightstown Inc., the market is located at Memorial Park on Main Street, overlooking Peddie Lake.
