Ongoing
   The Manville Public Library book sale is continuing at the library. Purchase the donated and surplus books to help support the library. Hard cover books for 50 cents; soft cover 25 cents each — or by the bag for $2.
   The Heat Baseball Club, an organization for serious and competitive baseball players in its 12th year of travel baseball, currently seeks players from the Somerset County area for next spring and summer. Teams will be fielded at each age from 9 years old and up — any player interested trying out, or coaching, should contact Jim Mazich at 908-281-5715.
   The Somerset County Park Commission is seeking children ages 6 — 12 to sign up as Junior Ranger recruits for a summer of outdoor entertainment and education. The Junior Rangers will learn about the natural world and how ecosystems work while working hand in hand with the Park Rangers; Junior Ranger Workbooks are available for free at the Ranger stations in Colonial Park in Franklin Township and Duke Island Park in Bridgewater. When the activities in the Workbook are completed a Park Ranger to review the work, administer the Junior Ranger pledge, and present the official Junior Ranger badge.
   Junior Rangers are also entitled to participate in special events and programs throughout the summer and fall. Upcoming programs include: Pond Clean-up at Colonial Park on Aug. 15; Tree Tour at Natirar on Sept. 25; Mountain Biking at Washington Valley Park on Oct. 2; and Learning Lenape at Colonial Park Nov. 20.

Thursday, Sept. 30
   Dine at the IHOP on Route 206 in Hillsborough on Sept. 30 and help raise funds for the New Jersey American Parkinson Disease Association to help fund Parkinson’s disease research and education.    Manville High School Class of 1960 will hold its 50th reunion Oct. 1 through Oct. 3. Events include a tour of the high school and recognition at the Oct. 1 football game, dinner and dancing Oct. 2 and a Sunday brunch on Oct. 3. For reservations or more information, call 908-313-3978.
Sunday, Oct. 3
   Somerset Medical Center’s second annual Steeplechase Distance Run will be held Oct. 3 at Auten Road Intermediate School, on Auten Road in Hillsborough. The event includes 25K and 5K runs, as well as a 1-mile walk, with proceeds benefitting Somerset Medical Center’s Steeplechase Cancer Center. Registration for the event will begin at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 3, followed by the 25K run at 8 a.m., 5K run at 8:30 a.m., and one-mile walk at 9:30 a.m. Fees range from $15 to $45, and participants are welcome to donate additional funds to the Steeplechase Cancer Center. Monday, Oct. 4
   Adult ESL Class for Manville residents will be offered on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., twice weekly for 10 weeks, beginning on Sept. 27 at Sts. Peter & Paul Orthodox church hall, 605 Washington Ave. The class is free — only charge is for purchase of a textbook and a workbook. Focus will be on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for high beginning to intermediate level. Instructor: Art Lisciandro.

   The Raritan Valley Chorus will resume rehearsals from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Nurture Center of the Neshanic Reformed Church, 715 Amwell Road in Hillsborough.    Residents are invited to the Manville Republican campaign fundraising dinner, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the VFW post on Washington Avenue, to help support candidates Lou Petzinger and Sue Asher. There will be a 50/50 drawing, door prizes, buffet-style dinner, and an opportunity to meet and speak with the candidates.    Jewish Family Service is offering a Job Seekers Support Group for active job seekers who are unemployed, underemployed or seeking a career change, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 6 at 150-A West High Street, Somerville. The topic for this session is “Everything you Wanted to Know About the Job Search Process But Never Got Around to Asking,” presented by Harold Levin, manager of SmartStaff Personnel.    The Manville Democratic Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Annex room at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290. The committee meets on the first Thursday of every month.    Manville Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troop 193 are sponsoring a night of wrestling by National Wrestling Superstars at 7:35 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290 on Washington Avenue.    The Woman’s Club of Hillsborough will hold a fashion show and basket auction Oct. 10 at B.P.O. Elks, 375 Union Ave., Bridgewater. Doors open at noon. Luncheon will be served.    The Manville Board of Education will meet at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the media center at Alexander Batcho Intermediate School.
   St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church will sponsor a Slavic dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 13. The dinner will be held in the St. Mary Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Blvd. The cost is $12 for adults (ages 9 and up) and $5 for children (8 and under), and includes all-you-can-eat pirohi, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, salad, desert and beverage.    Register now for Fran’s Christmas bus trip to see “Elf” at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York City Nov. 20.
