LAWRENCE: Residents advised to boil water

Lawrence Township residents who are customers of the Trenton Water Works have been advised to boil their water after pumps at the city’s water infiltration plant were shut down Monday, according to township officials.
Rainstorms over the past few days caused the Delaware River’s water level to rise, carrying silt and dirt into the pumps and damaging them, Municipal Manager Richard Krawczun said. The pumps need to be maintained differently under such conditions, he said.
The boil-water advisory affects 5,000 customers who live south of I-95, Mr. Krawczun said. The township Health Department has advised residents to boil water for one minute and then allow it to cool before using it for cold drinks, making ice cubes, washing vegetables and fruits, or brushing teeth.
It is permissible to wash clothing and to shower or bathe, but residents should not swallow water while they are showering or bathing, according to the advisory. Residents may use bottled water, but should not depend on home water filters to provide adequate protection during the advisory.
