A life in letters
The extraordinary life of Sylvia Beach (18876-1962), the American proprietor of the famous Paris bookshop Shakespeare & Company, is the topic of three programs at Princeton Public Library this fall. On Oct. 13, the documentary "Paris Was a Woman" will be screened. A discussion of Beach’s memoir, "Shakespeare and Company," will take place Oct. 19, and a reading and book-signing of "The Letters of Sylvia Beach" is scheduled for Oct. 21. All programs begin at 7 p.m.
"The Life and Times of Sylvia Beach" series, which is made possible through the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, opens with the award-winning documentary "Paris Was a Woman," and will be followed by a discussion with scholar Lee Mitchell. The film, about Paris during the early decades of the 20th century and the Left Bank inner circle of writers, has newly discovered home movies and anecdotes.
