Slackwood Church to host benefit concert

   The Rev. William Heard, minister of liturgy and family life at Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church in Camden will present “Songs From the Sanctuary,” a benefit concert at the Slackwood Presbyterian Church, 2020 Brunswick Ave., Lawrence, on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
   Mr. Heard will be accompanied by Michael R. Gittens on piano and organ. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Window Restoration Fund of the church.
   Slackwood Presbyterian Church began as a Sunday school in 1812 and became affiliated with the Presbyterian denomination in 1935. In addition to regular Sunday worship, the church is involved in a number of ministries in the community and around the world. Restoring the sanctuary windows to their original beauty is a present goal of the congregation as it continues to minister in the Lawrence community.
   ”Songs from the Sanctuary” will include sacred works showcasing hymns, spirituals, classic gospel and inspirational songs.
   The Rev. Heard is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary where he was the recipient of the David Hugh Jones prize for his contribution to the seminary music program, and the David Allen Weadon prize for excellence in sacred music. Before beginning his ministry at Kaighn Avenue Church he was associated with Union Baptist Church in Trenton and served as the music director for Revive! 2010. His CDs will be available for purchase following the concert.
   This concert is open to the public, tickets are not required. A free will offering will be received for the window fund.
